the Suxin Story
The above photo shows the ancient Chinese musical instrument called the Guqin. The guqin has not changed since its design was perfected sometime during the Han dynasty – which means it has a 2000-year-old Chinese cultural history, and even today (with one important exception) follows the ancient Chinese logic - Book of Changes
The silk clings to the wood.
Traditionally guqin strings were made of silk. We feel that guqin players by using silk strings can follow the way of traditional scholars who lived and dreamed with their guqin playing beautiful music that speaks of high mountain and flowing water. However in the war and turmoil in China from the middle of the 1850s until after 1970. guqin playing was difficult at best and impossible at times. This lead to the loss of the knowledge needed to make good quality silk strings, Guqin masters tried everything to recreate silk string technology. The most famous silk string modern researcher, Fuxi Zha, devoted his time looking for every possible way to revive this lost art – but unfortunately failed. In 1964, Guqin master Jinglue Wu developed the nylon-metal strings which are similar to modern harp strings. So far Qin players have not had good silk strings to play. A few guqin enthusiasts have developed their modern versions of silk strings, but they all too often have weak tone, are easy to break, and take too much effort in upkeep.
Suxin Fang collaborated with Geng Wang, successfully revived the entire silk string hand-making process and use top-quality materials to build the best silk string. Unlike general silk string makers, Fang makes it from scratch - picking the best cocoons and make them into musical string without any kind of modern chemicals.
Unlike Japanese silk strings, Traditional Chinese silk strings use multiple Chinese herbal medicines to shape the quality and the tone. Ms Fang solved the mystery of making silk strings, and became capable of building various tones by different ways.
